    Papers, protection, cheap credit

Land record or tenancy proof, bank account linked to Aadhaar, Farmer ID. Then crop or animal insurance and a Kisan Credit Card. Landless? Join a self-help group first.

    Start with two good animals

Grow green fodder first, then buy two high-yield cows or buffaloes. Insure them the day they arrive; vaccination and the 1962 vet van are free.

    Process, brand, sell direct

Turn produce into a product: a small processing unit, packing and your own label. Capital subsidy and cheap loans are built for this step.

The ten rungs every farmer climbs

  1. 01Get on the recordEvery scheme starts here. Without land papers, a bank account and a farmer ID, no money can reach you.
  2. 02Protect what you haveOne bad season should not wipe you out. Insure the crop, the animals and your old age.
  3. 03Borrow cheap, never from the moneylenderA Kisan Credit Card gives crop loans at a subsidised rate, and lower still when you repay on time.
  4. 04Know your soil, cut input costsTest the soil, use only what it needs, and move towards organic or natural farming with support.
  5. 05Make every drop countDrip, sprinklers, farm ponds and solar pumps — the biggest subsidies a small farmer can get.
  6. 06Machines, owned or hiredBuy a machine with a subsidy, or hire it from a custom hiring centre for a fraction of the cost.
  7. 07Add a second incomeFruit, vegetables, dairy, goats, fish, bees or mushrooms — each has its own mission with a capital subsidy.
  8. 08Store, grade, sell laterSelling at harvest means selling cheap. A store, pack house or cold room lets you wait for the price.
  9. 09Join handsAn FPO or cooperative buys inputs cheaper, sells in bulk and gets grants no single farmer can.
  10. 10Run a farm businessProcess, pack and brand what you grow. This is where a farmer becomes an entrepreneur.
