What it pays

2%premium you pay at most, kharif food grains & oilseeds

You pay at most 2% of the sum insured for kharif food grains and oilseeds, 1.5% for rabi, and 5% for commercial and horticultural crops. Government pays the rest of the premium.

These are ceilings: if the actuarial rate is lower, you pay the lower rate. Only notified crops in notified areas are covered.

“Table 1 — Maximum Premium Rate payable by farmer (% of Sum Insured): Kharif, All Food grain and Oilseeds crops (all Cereals, Millets, Pulses and Oilseeds crops): 2.0% of SI or Actuarial rate, whichever is less; Rabi, All Food grain and Oilseeds crops (all Cereals, Millets, Pulses and Oilseeds crops): 1.5% of SI or Actuarial rate, whichever is less; Kharif and Rabi, Annual Commercial/ Annual Horticultural crops: 5% of SI or Actuarial rate, whichever is less; Perennial horticultural / commercial crops (pilot basis): 5% of SI or Actuarial rate, whichever is less”

Papers you need

  • Aadhaar number (mandatory)
  • Land record (RoR, land possession certificate) — or, for sharecroppers and tenants, the agreement your state accepts
  • Declaration of the crop sown or to be sown
  • Bank account details

How to apply

  1. If you have a crop loan or KCC, your bank enrols you automatically unless you opt out at least seven days before the cut-off date (cl. 3.1.1.1).
  2. Otherwise enrol yourself before the cut-off date — at your bank, a Common Service Centre, an insurance agent, or on pmfby.gov.in.
  3. Declare the crop you have sown or intend to sow, and pay your share of the premium (cl. 3.1).

When to apply

Each season has a cut-off date set district by district — normally not later than 15 July for kharif and 15 December for rabi (cl. 16.2).

Combining with other schemes

The documents do not say whether this can be combined with other schemes. Ask the implementing office before you count on both.
