When an uninsured animal dies of anthrax, rabies, bird flu, poisoning or another disease, the owner gets ₹37,500 per milch cow, buffalo or camel (up to 3), ₹4,000 per sheep or goat (up to 30), ₹32,000 per draught animal (up to 3), ₹20,000 per calf or donkey (up to 6), or ₹100 a bird (up to ₹10,000).

How to apply
- Report the death to the nearest government veterinary dispensary; get a post-mortem report (not needed for rabies) and a panchnama of the place, date and cause (conditions 25–26).
- Attach the talati-cum-mantri’s certificate that the animal was registered in your name in the village register (condition 23).
- Apply to the district panchayat’s animal husbandry office, which pays within the scheme budget (budget head 2403-101-(18)).
Applying is free. Never pay anyone to apply for you.
